Making Sense of Scents by Michelle Sweeney

Christmas is only a couple of months away and perfume, as a gift, seems to be a particular favourite amongst shoppers. It is a personal gift which shows that you have put some thought into what you bought the recipient. It is also a good time to stock up on your favourite scents as most department stores offer discounted perfume packs to help lessen the expense on the pocket.

Selecting the right gift for the right person can be somewhat of a minefield. One way to help guide you is to ask them what their favourite perfume is or to sneak a peak at other scents they already own. By doing this then you are at least armed with enough information to select something they may like. As Christian Dior most eloquently commented “A women’s perfume tells more about her than her handwriting”. Most perfume stores offer a service whereby if you name a specific scent then they can offer a similar scent which features the same essential oils or blends so then you have a fair chance of your recipient liking the fragrance you purchase.

Another way to help narrow the options down to a particular type of scent is to look at the kind of person you are buying for and the clothes that they wear. Whilst this is common sense it is amazing how many people tend to overlook this fact and go for scents that they themselves would like. If the person you are buying for is always sporting the latest in cool clothes and trendy designs then opt for a fresh fruity fragrances. If your friend is a Laura Ashley fiend and just loves floral then it is obvious that they are going to prefer a more floral scented perfume. If your friend can “stop a man in his tracks with a single look” ala Memoirs of a Geisha style then they are probably more inclined to choose an oriental fragrance. It may not help you choose a specific fragrance but at least it narrows your options down somewhat.

Another way of selecting the right scent is by looking to Mother Nature for help. In spring, the season of romance, it is best to focus on fresh or floral scents. In summer try the crispier more fruity fragrances for a lighter scented option. In autumn as the weather drops slightly move towards the warmer earthier scents for a great pick me up. And in winter – opt for a more aromatic fragrance featuring oriental, woody or even rich vanilla tones to warm you up.

And if all else fails then selecting a box of chocolates might be the easier option!
